Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Nikko Blue’

Bigleaf or Mophead Hydrangea

Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Nikko Blue’ is a beautiful deciduous shrub known for its large, rounded clusters of blue flowers that brighten the garden throughout summer.

The flowers emerge in early summer and gradually change colour as the season progresses, often developing soft green and muted tones towards autumn. Their blue colour is most pronounced in acidic soil with available aluminium.

‘Nikko Blue’ thrives in moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil and prefers partial shade, especially protection from strong afternoon sun. It flowers mainly on old wood, so pruning should be kept to a minimum.

At The Reverie Garden, we particularly enjoy the changing colours of its flowers, which remain decorative long after their peak summer bloom.
